The Difference Between Overnight Doulas and Baby Nurses
Doulas focus on the entire family versus just taking care of the baby.
Doulas are there to coach you as you build your confidence in your own parenting style.
Doulas are entirely self-sufficient. They don’t expect meals to be prepared for them nor a separate bedroom. All they need is a flat surface to sleep on while the baby rests.
Their approach is geared towards making sure the whole family gets rest, as well as building confidence and knowledge during the visits.
Our doulas work off of evidence-based information gathered from their certifications and continuing education to help find the approach for your individual family.
All of our doulas are trained or certified in lactation support. They can work with you on a feeding schedule that supports your recovery, as well as a strong start to milk production.
Through the doulas’ integrative approach, the parents are working in conjunction with the doula to come up with the postpartum plan.
Postpartum doulas receive education on the physical and emotional recovery process after birth, infant feeding (breast, bottle, formula), lactation process, infant care, infant development in the early months, parenting philosophies, perinatal mood disorders, standards of postpartum support practice, and more!
The Details
If the budget allows, our recommendation is to book 6-8 weeks of overnight support to cross major milestones including the likely stabilization of hormones for the birthing parent, getting through baby’s first growth spurts/fussy periods and getting to a place where baby can sleep for longer stretches.
Visits are often 10 hrs and there is a min booking of 30 hrs.
The doula often rests with the baby in a separate space to maximize your sleep. If you’re wanting to breastfeed/nurse overnight, they will assist you with that or bottle feed.
Prices range from $40-80/hr based on the doulas’ experience, credentials, and expertise.
Our doulas are not sleep trainers and don’t provide awake care all night. If the baby sleeps, they are resting as well.
Our doulas are unlikely to be able to commit to specific nights of the week for visits weeks in advance. They will schedule with their clients week to week to provide flexibility for when births arise.
All of our postpartum doulas have gone through background checks and are up to date with their Tdap vaccines.
