NYC Birth Village Co-Founders
After 2 decades combined of supporting hundreds of families as birth and postpartum doulas, Narchi and Karla decided to take the expertise they had gathered to start a vibrant doula agency. Their dream was to have families guided by knowledgable doulas that shared in their philosophy of offering individualized, evidence based care given with great warmth and compassion.
And so NYC Birth Village doula agency was born.
Narchi
The Co-founders
I am a doula, childbirth educator, IBCLC and mother of three children, living on the UWS. I grew up in Romania during communism, a revolution, and the wild post-communism times. In spite of the difficulties, I immensely valued the education that I received in school and in life. In 1999, right after completing my degree in Sociology, my life took a radical turn when I won the lottery - the visa lottery to America! With little resources and lots of hope and faith, I started my journey as an immigrant that still continues to this day.
My passion for birth and lactation began through my own experiences– a cesarean, 2 VBACs, and 3 very different lactation journeys. After the birth of my last child in 2010, I quit the corporate world and started my education and work in the birth field. I was incredibly lucky to find my future doula partner, Karla, right off the bat! Together we supported hundreds of families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum time. Through my personal and professional experience I learned intimately about the importance of compassionate support during this powerful transition to becoming a parent of a new human being.
As co-founder of NYC Birth Village and doula mentor, I aim to share from my doula knowledge and life experience, instill confidence, and teach skills, so that people who chose this special work can build sustainable and successful practices. I love building a strong NYC Birth Village, one doula and client at a time.
Vivian
Our Administrator
Vivian is a student at American University in DC, studying neuroscience on a premedical track. She aspires to work in neurology as a career, and potentially specialize in pediatrics. She is inspired by systems of healthcare from many domains, including maternal health and lactation. Vivian gained enriching experience through her positions as a camp counselor/teacher for children, program leader at her university, library assistant, and as a psychology research assistant. As a daughter of a doula, she has witnessed the selfless work and passion that this field fosters. Vivian is excited to be a part of the NYC Birth Village team, supporting the doula and birth community in an administrative role.
Karla
I'm a veteran birth and postpartum doula and certified breastfeeding counselor that has supported families throughout NYC. Previously, I graduated from Tulane University with degrees in Psychology and Political Science. I worked for 9 years as a political campaign director coaching activists and organizers to find the courage and will to run challenging environmental, human rights, and electoral campaigns. Today, I’m the proud co-founder of NYC Birth Village doula agency where we are excited to support and coach doulas as they welcome the next generation of human beings into this world!
I was surprisingly thrown into this work when my sister asked me to be her doula the day her labor started. Little did I know that experience would change my life forever. A decade later, I’ve had the pleasure to witness hundreds of new lives enter this world. I've been taken aback by how beautiful yet challenging this work can be. I've loved the intimate experiences I have shared with families - tears of joy and sometimes pain, quiet moments staring at a newborn and moments of hope for all that is to come. Through the ups and downs of parenting, I saw first hand what a little guidance, support, reassurance and a smile could do.
As co-founder of NYC Birth Village and doula mentor, I am now happy to dedicate my time to building a strong team of doulas that can work closely with families to straddle the worlds of hope and fear with much empathy, finesse and expertise.
