Questions to ask doulas during your interviews

Please make sure both you and your partner (if applicable) are present during the consultations. If you need to reschedule please let the doula know in advance.

Most of our clients interview at least two doulas for each service so they can have a good sense of which doula is the right fit for their family. Your consultation(s) give you the chance to get to learn about their style, philosophy and set up expectations about how their support will look like.

Please note that doulas can rarely hold a spot for a client, as they are always interviewing in an effort to fill their schedules. Once you feel that click with a doula and want to have their support for your birth/postpartum journey, let them and us know to make things official!

Birth Doulas

  2. What can I expect during our working relationship?

  3. How will you support me to work towards my ideal birth vision?

  4. How do you approach an induction? What if I need a c-section?

  5. Will you be available throughout my whole due date window? What happens if I give birth before 37 weeks?

  6. What happens if you have a personal emergency, or in case of sickness or if you’re at another birth?

  7. Who is your backup doula? Will I get to meet them?

  8. Can you hold my spot while I interview other doulas and if so for how long?

  9. How do I secure your services? How does the payment work?

  10. Can you provide an itemized receipt so I can receive reimbursement from my HSA/FSA/benefit program?

Postpartum/Overnight Doulas

  1. How would you define your style?

  2. What can I expect throughout our working relationship?

  3. How does a typical visit look like?

  4. How do you approach the feeding/lactation support?

  5. Will you be available throughout my whole due date window? What happens if I give birth before 37 weeks?

  6. What happens if we have a scheduled visit and you have a personal emergency, or in case of sickness, or if you’re at birth? What happens if anyone in my family is sick?

  7. How does the scheduling of the visits work?
